The Screwtape letters
The Screwtape letters are written by one of my favourite authors, C.S. Lewis. Using one of Lewis’ Screwtape letters as basis, I produced, filmed, and edited a three minute live action video. The video features myself as Screwtape writing to a young demon, Wormwood. I cropped the frame of the video so that only the arm and parts of Screwtape’s body are visible throughout the film. Screwtape’s face is never revealed providing the viewer with a slight sense of unease and mystery regarding his features and identity while allowing the viewer to remain attentive to the narration. Screwtape narrates during the video as Bach’s Sonata No. 1 sombrely plays in the background. In addition to this, kinetic typography is brought in to help illustrate the mood and feeling of the production. The narration voice for Screwtape along with all video and audio editing was done by myself. Bach’s Sonata No. 1 was played by Allison Scholtens (my sister who is an accomplished violinist). The video tested my abilities beyond any other work of mine forcing me to learn new techniques at every turn. Despite the challenge in designing and creating a production which elicits a somber and yet enlightened feeling, I feel the final product is exactly the result I was looking for.
